Search and rescue volunteers with headlamps searching a field at night for a missing person

On the night of January 31, 2026, 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie returned to her home in Tucson, Arizona, after spending the evening with family.

By the early hours of February 1, something had gone terribly wrong.

Nancy was no longer there.

Her disappearance quickly became far more than a missing-person investigation. Authorities found evidence indicating that she may have been taken from her home against her will, and the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department began investigating the case as a suspected abduction.

What made the situation even more alarming was what Nancy had left behind.

Her phone, wallet, hearing aid, medication and car were still at the house. Nancy also had a pacemaker and required daily medication for a heart condition, making her disappearance particularly concerning.

Investigators later focused on a critical 41-minute window during the early morning hours.

Authorities said Nancy’s doorbell camera was disabled at approximately 1:47 a.m., while data associated with her pacemaker disconnected from her phone around 2:28 a.m. Investigators also released surveillance footage showing what appeared to be an armed, masked individual near the home.

The investigation soon attracted national attention because Nancy is the mother of NBC’s Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie.

Savannah and her siblings made emotional public appeals for their mother to be brought home. The family repeatedly urged anyone with information to come forward.

Investigators searched the surrounding area, examined surveillance footage, collected forensic evidence and followed thousands of tips. At one point, authorities conducted a search operation at a residence roughly two miles from Nancy’s home, but no arrest was made.

The case later took another disturbing turn.

Authorities released information about two alleged ransom notes connected to Nancy’s disappearance. The first demanded $4 million in bitcoin, increasing to $6 million if the demand was not met within three days. A second note reportedly claimed that Nancy had died after being taken and that her body had been “buried in nature.” Authorities released the notes in hopes that someone might recognize the writing or information contained in them.

However, authorities have not publicly established the authenticity of every detail contained in those notes, and the investigation remains active.

Six months after Nancy disappeared, investigators still have not publicly identified a person responsible for her disappearance.

In July 2026, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said the investigation was still active and had not become a cold case. Investigators were continuing to analyze DNA evidence and work with laboratories around the country.

The FBI has offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to Nancy’s recovery and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.

For Nancy’s family, the hardest part may be the uncertainty.

They still do not have the answers they desperately want: Where is Nancy? Who took her? And what happened after she disappeared from her home?

Months have passed, but the investigation continues.

And somewhere, investigators believe, there may be someone who knows what happened.

Someone may have seen something. Someone may have heard something. And that information could finally bring Nancy’s family the answers they have been waiting for.
