For years, Haylee and Shawn Ladner dreamed of hearing the sound of a baby crying in their home.
They imagined tiny fingers wrapping around theirs. They pictured late-night feedings, first smiles and the simple chaos of raising a child.
But becoming parents did not come easily.
After struggling to conceive and experiencing pregnancy loss, the couple from Purvis, Mississippi, continued hoping that someday their dream would finally come true. They eventually turned to intrauterine insemination, or IUI, never imagining just how extraordinary the outcome would be.
On February 16, 2023, their lives changed forever.
Haylee underwent a C-section at 28 weeks and one day of pregnancy. In the space of just four minutes, she and Shawn became parents to not one baby, but five.
Adalyn.
Everleigh.
Malley.
Magnolia.
And their little brother, Jake.
Four identical sisters and one boy.
It was an extraordinarily rare pregnancy. According to their hospital, one fertilized egg divided to form the four girls, while another became their son.
But the joy of meeting their babies came with enormous worry.
Because they had arrived so early, all five newborns needed specialized care in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s of Mississippi. The smallest of the babies, Malley Kate, weighed just 1 pound, 11 ounces.
Their parents had spent weeks preparing for the birth, but nothing could truly prepare them for seeing five tiny babies fighting to grow stronger.
Haylee had already spent five weeks in the hospital before delivery. A large medical team was assembled, carefully preparing for the complicated arrival.
Five warming stations were ready.
Five sets of medical equipment.
Five tiny lives needing attention.
And two parents trying to hold onto hope.
The weeks that followed were filled with small victories.
One baby learned to feed a little better.
Another gained some much-needed weight.
Another became strong enough to take another step toward leaving intensive care.
There were setbacks, uncertainty and countless moments when Haylee and Shawn could only wait beside their babies and believe that tomorrow might be better.
Then came a beautiful reminder of how far they had already come.
That Easter, the couple celebrated inside the NICU with all five children gathered in their arms.
It was not the Easter they had once imagined. They were not gathered around a dining table at home. Their babies were still receiving intensive medical care.
But they were together.
And together was enough.
Month by month, the five little ones grew stronger.
By July 2023, something that once seemed almost impossible finally happened.
All five babies were home.
The quiet house Haylee and Shawn had once dreamed about was suddenly anything but quiet.
Their days became a whirlwind of bottles, diapers, naps, crying, cuddling and very little sleep.
There were five babies to feed.
Five babies to comfort.
Five babies to watch over.
And because the four girls were identical, their parents even needed a clever way to tell them apart.
They began painting their toenails different colors — teal, pink, dark blue and orange — giving each little girl her own tiny identifying mark.
Their family had gone from desperately hoping for one child to learning how to care for five at the same time.
And then, somehow, the story became even more surprising.
On July 17, 2024, Haylee welcomed another daughter.
Ella Claire.
The pregnancy had been unexpected.
After years of wondering whether they would ever become parents, Haylee and Shawn now had six children.
Six little lives filling their home.
Six personalities waiting to emerge.
Six reasons to wake up each morning to a house full of noise and movement.
Their journey is a reminder that life does not always follow the timeline we imagine.
Sometimes the road to becoming a parent is filled with heartbreak and uncertainty.
Sometimes the dream takes much longer than expected.
And sometimes, when that dream finally arrives, it arrives in a way you could never have planned.
Haylee and Shawn once hoped for the chance to raise one baby.
Instead, they became the parents of five newborns at the same time — and later welcomed a sixth child into their family.
Their story began with years of waiting.
It continued with five fragile babies fighting to grow.
And today, it is a story about a family that became much bigger than they ever imagined.
Because sometimes life doesn’t simply give you what you wished for.
Sometimes it gives you an entire house full of reasons to be grateful. 🍼❤️
If you suddenly had five newborns at home, what would you organize first — feeding schedules, sleeping shifts, or a team of helping hands?
